Mayor, City of Overland Park

Overland Park faces challenges, no doubt. There is a need for more affordable housing, and the city’s residents — like those of just about every Kansas community — continue to express concerns about the burden of property taxes. (The city’s rate is low compared to the rest of Johnson County, but high property valuations mean homeowners still feel the pinch.) Longtime residents aren’t always comfortable with the new development that goes along with a growing population, either. Overall, though, the trend seems solid. Which suggests Overland Park is best served by a steady hand at the helm. That is why we endorse Mayor Curt Skoog for reelection.

Mayor Skoog has done an excellent job of steering the city of Overland Park, as far as bringing in new businesses; working to increase walkable, mixed-use areas across the city; continuing to build up parks; and prioritizing safety. I am especially happy with the OPCAT program (Overland Park Crisis Action Team), which provides trauma-informed mental health support during emergency calls, as needed. Mayor Skoog also adopted a Non-Discrimination Ordinance, protecting the rights of our LGBTQ+ families, friends, and neighbors. These priorities have led to Overland Park frequently being highly ranked on lists of Best Places to live, work, play, and retire. Skoog is also a Gun Sense Candidate, meaning he has pledged to govern with gun violence prevention in mind.
