Attorney General, State of California
Supporters rally behind a record of protecting public safety, defending fundamental rights, and standing up for working families. The coalition points to strength on gun violence prevention, labor protections, reproductive freedom, environmental action, and civil rights. Broad support from unions, advocacy groups, and elected leaders signals confidence in steady statewide legal leadership.
Rob Bonta has enforced state housing law against recalcitrant cities like Huntington Beach to build more homes.
Bonta has been an effective AG focused on housing enforcement: he co-sponsored SB 1037 to fine cities blocking housing and forced compliance from Fullerton, Norwalk, and Huntington Beach, among others. He also secured a $7M settlement from Greystar for using software to illegally coordinate rent prices. He's filed 50+ lawsuits defending California against the Trump administration.
There’s a lot of reasons to like Rob Bonta, but enforcing the laws that require cities to quit messing around and build housing is my favorite. We have secured incredible wins in the legislature thanks to Scott Wiener, but if the AG doesn’t hold cities accountable, nothing will happen. Who can forget the AG’s letter to the city of Woodside explaining they couldn’t weasel out of building new housing because they claimed the entire town to be a mountain lion habitat? Fighting organized retail theft, fentanyl, and illegal rent-price-fixing all while resisting the overreach of our current federal partners makes me sad Bonta has only two terms available to him.
