Strong safe choice. Barrera is a veteran of San Diego’s school board, and as such, also knows exactly how the state and school districts interact. He’s a proven quantity and not a crazy idealogue. He’s fought for teacher’s salaries in San Diego to be raised and they have, and he’s part of a measurable improvement in raising standards for the curriculum of San Diego schools so that they all teach the A-G requirements. (And, as such, they raised minority accomplishment of those goals in the process) The San Diego school district he serves on the board of gets high marks for protecting gay and lesbian students from harassment, and that's not something to give a pass on. Barrera is someone who's ready to get into the weeds on the numbers and knows tons about how school districts work. An excellent choice.
